You’ve heard the word countless times, especially if you have eyesight problems. LASIK. You may — even without thinking about it — know that LASIK is an acronym. Can you imagine what it’s an acronym for? (Spoiler alert: it’s Latin.) Here’s the answer to that question, along with information about four of the key benefits of undergoing LASIK surgery in Calgary.
The acronym LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis. It is a laser-based surgery that can correct astigmatism, nearsightedness (astigmatism), and farsightedness (hyperopia). During LASIK surgery, the eye surgeon changes the shape of the cornea located at the front of your eye to make sure that the light entering your eye is focused properly on the retina at the back of your eye.
Incredible as it may sound, LASIK surgery in Calgary corrects your vision in less than one minute for each eye, depending on your prescription. The entire procedure typically takes less than ten minutes for each eye. Once your surgery is complete, you’ll be escorted to a waiting area to relax how quickly will you notice results?
You’ll begin to notice the results of your LASIK surgery within hours. Two days after undergoing LASIK in Calgary — just 48 hours later — your eyesight will be nearly perfect. At that point, just two days after your surgery, you’ll be able to return to all your usual activities. Having said that, we’ll recommend that you take a few days off of work to make sure your eyes recover fully. It is possible that for several weeks following LASIK surgery, you may experience eye dryness. The ophthalmologist and staff at Clarity Laser Vision will provide advice and support for dealing with that temporary dryness.
After undergoing LASIK surgery in Calgary to treat myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, you may no longer require glasses or contacts. Studies have shown that approximately 95% of people who undergo LASIK recovery vision of 20/40 or better. Approximately 80% of patients recovered at least 20/20 vision. Within those statistics, though, is the important reality that your results will depend on your personal circumstances, including such factors as your age and the health of your eyes. LASIK is not ideal for everyone and for every eye condition. While the goal of LASIK surgery in Calgary is to reduce your dependence on glasses, it may not completely eliminate your need to use glasses in some situations such as when reading.
The United States Food and Drug Administration approved LASIK surgery in 1999. Between 1999 and July 2018, one report has found that 10,000,000 underwent LASIK surgery — a number that increases by approximately 700,000 surgeries annually. One ophthalmologist and former President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery has described LASIK as the safest and most effective procedure that has ever existed in ophthalmology. The August 2016 edition of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery reported that LASIK has a patient satisfaction rate of 96%. No elective procedure has a higher patient satisfaction rate than LASIK.
Patients who elect to undergo LASIK surgery near you experience no pain.
