The Diet for Healthy Eyes

June 4, 2017

You’ve probably heard that carrots are good for your vision, but carrots and eyes aren’t the only pair that go hand-in-hand. There are plenty of great foods for eye health, and whether you have poor vision or are looking to prevent it in the future, everyone can benefit from incorporating a few of these foods into their regular diets. But first, it’s important to understand the science behind why these foods are effective.

Nutrients to Know

The reason that carrots are good foods for the eyes is that they, along with other orange foods, are high in a type of vitamin A. But that’s not the only vitamin that can benefit your eye health. Zinc, antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, and DHA are a few other nutrients that can prevent macular degeneration and cataracts over time and keep your vision in top shape.

Food for Healthy Eyes

So how can you incorporate these nutrients into your diet? It’s easier than you may think. Aside from taking dietary supplements, you can make an effort to eat more whole foods that are high in these types of vitamins. Fruits and vegetables such as citrus, berries, and greens, fatty fish such as salmon or tuna, foods high in healthy fat such as avocado, almonds, or olive oil, and foods high in zinc like eggs or chickpeas can all benefit your vision over time. Try to incorporate a few servings of these nutrient-rich foods into your everyday diet for the best results.

What Not to Eat

Just as there are plenty of great foods for eye health, there are also foods you should avoid if you want to maintain your vision. Fried or processed foods, trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup, and carbohydrates can all damage your eye health when consumed too much.

If you’re concerned about worsening vision, the best thing to do is to seek a professional medical opinion. Call Clarity Vision Centre to set up an appointment for an assessment and consultation today!
