Sight is one of the most vital of the senses and one of the most overlooked. Just because we see clearly with our eyes from the moment we awake till we sleep, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care properly for them. Seeing how important the eyes are, we can do better.
Keep your eyes safe by avoiding these common mistakes that put your sight at risk.
Skipping your annual eye examination puts them at risk. A lot of changes could occur in a year with your vision which you might not be able to notice. Some health condition like diabetes and hypertension can also be detected in their early stages from a thorough examination of the eyes.
Wearing contact lens while you sleep could lead to infections and ulcers because your corneas are deprived of valuable oxygen. Always remember to remove your contact lens before sleeping even if for a short nap.
Going without sunglasses in winter could cause corneal burns and spots on the whites of your eyes. The sunlight reflecting off the snow is to be blamed. However, wearing sunglasses which protect against UVA and UVB rays offers your eyes protection against damage.
A large part of our time is spent staring into screens in this technology age. Studies have shown that this is dangerous to our eyes. Hence, experts recommend following the 20-20-20 rule. That is, you should take your eyes off the screen after every 20-minutes and look at something 20 feet away for 20 minutes.
Touching or rubbing your eyes exposes them to infections. It could also cause broken blood vessels and inflammation.
See your optometrist if you have concerns about your eyes. The need to care for them so the last for a long time cannot be overemphasized.
