Dr. Marcella LaBelle’s first introduction into laser eye surgery was in the early 90’s when laser surgery was in its infancy. She paid for her undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry) by working in a private Optometry clinic as an ophthalmic assistant, and at that time received training at a large surgical practice in Toronto centering around patient education for refractive surgery. After graduating with a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2002, she worked for 3 years in private practice before joining a large refractive surgery practice in Calgary in 2005. Since then, she has dedicated her career to working in the Cataract and Refractive surgery field. In addition to pre- and post-operative surgical care, she has a special interest in tertiary dry eye care. Dr. LaBelle has lectured extensively throughout Western Canada on various topics surrounding surgical co-management care by Optometrists. Dr. LaBelle’s academic involvement has included being a clinical examiner in Optometry board exams as well as overseeing Optometry student interns in clinic. Dr. LaBelle is married to John, a previous business analyst-turned-stay-at-home dad to their young daughter, Ava. When not juggling family and work life, she paints, with her favorite medium being acrylic on canvas. Her paintings often require 20 to 40 layers of glazing paint and can take several months to complete; a testament to the detailed and meticulous approach that she takes in all her endeavors.
